3: Problems with Living on Another Planet
This video includes Mars as ‘unliveable’ but considering what you have discovered about Mars One and NASA’s planned missions do you think this is true? These are the reasons why not but maybe we have technology or can invent new ways to overcome the problems! Try and think of why we CAN live on other planets
Magnetic Field:
This article (Zolfagharifard, 2014) talks about the importance of the Earth’s magnetic field in protecting life from damaging particles from the sun.
Gravity: changes in gravity have a big impact on the human body.
Gravitational Biology: the effect of gravity on living organisms (Wikipedia, 2015)
The Body in Space: effects on the bones, muscles, sleep and many body systems explained (NSBRI, 2015)
Negative Effects of Space Exploration on the Human Body: links to videos and images to show you how it works (CSEWI, 2014)
Atmosphere:
National Geographic video (National Geographic, n.d.) explaining the origin of the earth’s atmosphere and the structure of it. How the atmosphere creates weather and acts as a fluid.
Work through this video interactive (ABC Splash, 1998) to learn about why the earth needs it’s atmosphere!
Temperature:
You can see that the further from the sun the colder the planets in our solar system get…but why is venus so hot (Cain, 2009)?? Have a listen here (Cain, 2007) if you want to discover more details about Venus.
But don’t forget to look outside our Solar System too!
‘Superhabitable‘:
Why stop at Earth-like planets? Listen to this audio (Greenfieldboyce, 2014) to learn about where scientists are looking for life.
